[ad_1] This catalog documents the achievements of the late Sir Nicholas Shackleton (1937-2006) in the assembly of one of the best collections of musical instruments in the world. The Sir Nicholas Shackleton Collection, reunited over a period of 40 years, was bequeathed to the University of Edinburgh, where it remains a resource for learning and research. The purpose of this catalog is to summarize the research resource provided by the Collection.
The bound volume of more than 800 pages offers detailed descriptions of over 900 instruments and related items and is illustrated by more than 1000 full-color illustrations. The instruction books compiled to support the study of the instruments are listed. The clarinets (which constitute the main emphasis of the collection) cover a period of 250 years and range from double basses to the smallest clarinets of regular use (in the upper part A). All the major instrument manufacturing regions of the world are represented.

One of the main strengths of the Collection is the comprehensive coverage of the astounding variety of key systems invented to address problems in the design of clarinets.

The text has been prepared by a team of authors, the main author, Heike Fricke, who wrote the descriptions of the instruments of the clarinet family.

The book is profusely illustrated with photographs taken specifically by Dr. Raymond Parks, Honorary Curator of the Collection of Historical Musical Instruments at the University of Edinburgh.
